Note on Marriage

In 1881, Michael was the head of the household at 28 Main Street, Shettleston. He was an unemployed coal miner, and living there were his 5 youngest siblings, all of whom were working, and his mother.

Mary appears in the 1900 US census in Passaic, New Jersey. Sons William and Andrew lived with her, and it was stated that she had 11 children but only 9 alive. They all arrived in 1885/6. As with all the US census returns for this family, the dates of birth are inaccurate, and it even says here that Thomas was Scottish.

Although aged 75, Mary was listed as a labourer and her home was rented - so leaving Scotland hadn't necessarily improved their wealth.

By 1910 she was still aged 75 according to the census! William and Andrew were living with her, and she now listed herself as having 10 children, 8 of whom were living. She was doing house work by that point.

In the 1910 census, their son Bernard says that his parents are in fact Scottish, whereas other records say they are Irish. It is more likely that their own census returns are accurate and that they are from Ireland.

Note on Husband: Thomas Teevan

Thomas was an iron labourer in 1859.

Stayed in Calton Street, Shettleston in 1861. Thomas was a furnace labourer while Mary was an agricultural labourer. Their eldest sons, John and James, were working as an agricultural labourer and a tailor's apprentice respectively.

In 1862, Thomas was a labourer.

In 1871 he was an unemployed labourer. He and his family were living in Tollcross, Shettleston. The four eldest children - aged from 14 to 24 - were working. The 10 of them lived in a house where only 2 rooms had one or more windows.
