William emigrated to America in 1873.

In the 1890 Oregon trade directory, he was working as a labourer with his brother John at North Pacific Railroad. By the next directory the following year, both brothers had moved to another place to work - North Portland Freight Depot.
In 1910, William's daughter was staying with him and Vesey - who still had no children - in Multnomah, Oregon. William was working as a city policeman and owned his house outright.
By 1920, William and Vesey were in Seaside, Clatsop, Oregon. Aged 65, he owned his own house but was no longer working.
