Note on Marriage

The 1851 Fenelon, Victoria, Ontario census lists James and Bernard Teevens, aged 37 and 39 respectively. James was a farmer and Bernard a teacher; both were Catholic.

===========================

Charles McGann and Margaret Hutton were witnesses to the wedding.

The family appeared in the 1881 Canadian census, staying in Fenelon, Victoria North, Ontario.

===========================

In 1891, James was living with his son James' family at Fenelon.

============================

A newspaper mentioned Mary's death in 1885:

"TEEVIN - At the family residence, 'Teevin-field', in Fenelon, on the 23rd April 1885, Mary Hutton, wife of James Teevin, in her 63rd year."

And another obituary said:

"We regret this week to have to record the demise on Tuesday last of an old and respected resident of Fenelon, Mrs James Teevin, after a lingering illness. Mrs Teevin was the second daughter of the late Francis Hutton. She was born at Galloway, in the south of Scotland, and with the family removed to this country when seven years old. She leaves a family of five sons and one daughter. Her death is very much depolred as her kind and affable disposition had gained for her the esteem of all with whom she associated."

==============================

James left a will, in which his son James Joseph and a Thomas Flynn (relative of daughter-in-law Margaret?) were named his executors.

At the time of his death, his fixed abode was in Fenelon, Victoria, and he was described as a yeoman.

The will was made on the 18th of January 1897, about a week before he died - which explains his rather shaky signature at the end.

His real estate was valued at $3000, and his personal estate - which was in the form of a security for money under a lease - as $190. He died with just $2.50 in cash.

In his instructions, he said "I forgive to my son James Joseph Teevin any and all debts or claims which I may have against him and all arrears of annuity which may be owing or accruing due to me".

Thereafter, he gave his executors the responsibility of selling off some land so as to pay off his mortgage and to provide for "a suitable monument over my grave". The parish priest of St. Mary's Church, Lindsay, was to receive $20 to celebrate Masses for James' soul.

Next, his sons James and John were to receive $300 and the remainder was to be shared equally among Thomas, William, James and John - with no mention of Edward.

As for his daughter, he expressly and succinctly stated that "it is not my intention to give any portion to my daughter Margaret Jane Taylor".

The residue of the estate was bestowed on James Joseph. The preference of this son throughout, coupled with the entire exclusion of Edward and more expressly, Margaret, hints at a family story which will unfortunately never be known now. Perhaps Edward had died before then - but Margaret hadn't.
