Note on Husband: Thomas Teevan

In 1881 Thomas was a general labourer, living with his mother and siblings at his brother Michael's house in Tollcross, Lanark.

Emigrated to America.

In 1890-1 he was a clerk, and a grocer soon after that until at least 1893. He was still living with his siblings, at 127 Jersey Street, Paterson, New Jersey.

1900 census - living in Paterson, Passaic, New Jersey with his wife Sarah and children. It gives his date of birth as October 1865, and states that they had 3 children, though only 2 still living.

By the 1910 census, he was listed as Thomas L Teevan - but he had no middle name when he was born. By now, they'd had 5 children and only 3 were alive.

He appears again in the 1920 US Census in Paterson with Sarah and a daughter Anna J Teevan. It states that he arrived in 1886 and was naturalised in 1888.

Sarah was also Scottish, but arrived before Thomas, in 1885. In one census it says that her mother was Irish and her father Scottish, but the 1910 census has them both listed as Scottish. In 1930 she put her father as Scottish and her mother as from Southern Ireland.

Both Thomas and Sarah could read and write and their home was rented in the early census records.

Thomas was listed in 1891-1893 trade directories as a grocer, but he was an insurance agent in 1900. In 1910 he was a wagon driver for a silk mill. His occupation is illegible in 1920 but it looks like a shopping [something] in a silk mill. In 1930 he was a finisher in a silk mill.

Sarah appears on a shipping manifest in 1914, making her way back to Paterson from Glasgow. She was travelling as a tourist, with a 25-year old (single) Margaret Teevan. They were clearly visiting home and must have therefore made enough money by that point to live a good life.

By 1930, Thomas owned the family home, which was worth $6000. Leonora and Roger were still living at home.

Note on Wife: Sarah ?

Her father was Scottish and her mother was from Southern Ireland.
