Note on Marriage

The family were staying in Almonte, Lanark North, Ontario in 1881, when Patrick was working as a blacksmith.

A multiple tragedy struck the family in 1883. On the 18th of April 1883, Eliza caught diptheria. She died three days later, but not before passing it on to her sister Mary Ann who then died two days after her sister, on the 23rd. At that point the parents were no doubt hoping that their last child, who had not yet shown symptoms, would survive - but the next day he too became ill and died in a further two days.

Their last remaining child, Francis John, was only a year old, but he died two weeks later. Patrick and Mary were left without any of their four children.

By 1884 Patrick and Mary were living in Huntley, where he was still working as a blacksmith.

In 1901, Patrick was a merchant. Five of his children were at home with him and his wife.

In 1911, Patrick was living at 300 James Street, Ottowa. Three of his children - Agnes, Lambert and Evelyn - were still staying with him.
