Still living at home with his parents in 1901 in Liverpool, John was working as a clerk.

In May 1907 he sailed from Canada to Detroit, Michigan. He was still a clerk, and being single, he travelled alone, aged 26. His last permanent residence was listed as Hamilton, Canada and he paid for the passage himself. He carried $150 with him and this was the first time he had been to the USA. He stated that he was not going to join a relative.

On the 28th of June 1912, when he was 31, John sailed with his wife Gertrude on the Empress Of Ireland from Liverpool to Quebec, Canada. He arrived on the 5th of July. His last permanent residence was noted as Chicago, USA so he must have left America to visit home, before heading back via Canada.

He was naturalized as an American citizen on the 2nd of April 1913 by the Court of Northern Illinois according to one census, although in another he says 1909.

On 12 September 1918, when he was 37, John was drafted into the US Army. He was living at that point at 6713 Glenwood Avenue, Chicago and was a lawyer working at 111 Washington St, Chicago. According to his registration card, he was of medium height and build and had grey eyes and brown hair.

He, his wife and their son John are listed in the 1920 American Census. They were renting a home in Chicago, and their name was (mis)spelled as Tevan, and he was listed as an attorney.

He sailed again in 1922 from Liverpool, arriving in Quebec, Canada. He was on the "Montrose" and this time, was alone. His American address was 1611 Conway Buildings, Chicago.

In 1937 John and Gertrude visited England, sailing back to the USA from Liverpool in July on the Samaria ship. Their American address was by then 1619 Ridge Avenue, Evanston, Illinois.
