The retirement from the service, receiving the value of his commission, from Captain and Brevet Major George James Teevan, half-pay, late 94th Foot, to be dated 14th September 1878, instead of 20th July 1878, as stated in the Gazette on the 6th of August 1878.
In 1881 George and Annie were living with a servant at Logan Terrace, South Shields, Durham. George had retired as the Chief Officer of Police.
Ten years later the pair no longer had a servant, and were staying at 35 Albany Villas, Hove, Sussex. He was listed as a Major (retired) Chief of Hove Police.
He must have either been running out of money or missing his job, because by 1901 he was working again as the Chief Constable. Still living in Hove, he and his wife were now at 68 Clarendon Villas. They had a general domestic servant again.
George wrote a handbook for the police. The Sussex Police Authority have it:
FILE - Town of Hove - ref. SPA/9/6/1 - date: 29 Aug 1894
Constable's hand-book compiled by Major G J Teevan, Chief Constable of Hove; submitted to and approved by the Police Committee
