Note on Marriage

In 1871, aged just 14, Bernard was a drawer in a coal pit. He lived in Tollcross, Shettleston, Glasgow with his parents and 7 siblings. By 1881, he was still a coal miner and living at home.

Thomas Teevan and Margaret McCourt were witnesses to the wedding.

Bernard and his wife emigrated to America in 1885 and were naturalized in 1888.

In 1900, the family were staying in Paterson, New Jersey. Bernard was a day labourer and all nine of their children were living with them in their rented house.

They appear in the 1910 American census in Paterson, New Jersey with six of their children. It is stated that Margaret had 8 children, of whom 7 were living. Bernard was working as a machinist and while some of the children were working, his wife was not.

In 1920, Bernard was working as a machinist at the steam railroad and his six children, aged up to 30, were still living at home.
