Note on Husband: James Teevin

In 1857 - 1870 he was a limestone miner, but by 1881 he was a factory worker, and in 1887 he was a mill worker. On his son Robert's death certificate he was described as a dyer (journeyman).

James could sign his own name, and spelled it Teevin or Teevan - so he was educated to a higher degree than most labourers.

Note on Wife: Jane Stewart

The publication of the Banns for their wedding was on 21st April 1854. At that time, James was a labourer and Jane was named Jean. Both were residing in Lennoxtown, Campsie, Stirling.

James Teevin and James Gormlay witnessed the Banns.

Jane was staying at Stirling Road, St Ninians in the 1881 census where she was head of the household, though not yet widowed. Her sons Robert, Thomas and Alex were staying with her. Two of her grandchildren also lived there - William Brown, a 16-year old woolen piner, and Janet Teaven age 6, both born in Cambusbarron, Stirling.

In the 1891 census, Jane is the head of the Teaven (sic) household in Stirling Road, St Ninian's. Her sons Robert, Thomas and Alexander were staying with her, as were her 16-year old grandson, William Brown and 6-year old grand-daughter Janet Teaven.

In the 1901 census, Jane appeared as a widow living at St Ninians. Two of her sons, Thomas and Alexander, were living with her as was her grandson Thomas (age 9, born Cambusbarron, Stirling).
