When Emma was 17 years old, she was a house servant for the family of James Hickling, a "photograph artist".

 

In 1881 census, she was widowed and living with her niece Ellen Taylor (26) and boarders Lizzie and Mary Kenny, in Quarry Street, Hamilton.

 

In 1891 census, she was head of the household in Kelvinside, Glasgow and living with 5 of her stepchildren from her brief marriage to John Toye.
