Note on Marriage
In the 1869 New York City Directory, John was listed as a labourer. They lived either at 208 W. 58th Street or 76 Henry Street [two John's were listed, and both were labourers].
John and Mary appear with their son and daughter in the 1870 census. They were living in New York (Post Office 31 Market Street) and John was a labourer. Their 17-year old daughter Mary was also bringing in a wage as a book server. John could read but not write, while his wife could do neither.
