Note on Marriage

Michael appears in the 1857 city directory for New York. In the newspaper industry, he worked at 89 Centre Street and lived at 143 Leonard Street. Living at the same address was Catherine, the widow of Thomas - his sister in law or mother?

In 1870, Michael's family, along with John who was presumably his brother, were staying in New York Ward 6 District 4. Both Michael, who had $200 of personal estate, and John were working as newsagents.

By 1880, Michael's family were living in District 50, New York (Manhattan), without his brother John. Two children had been born since the last census, but Edward was missing - perhaps he had died? Two lodgers were staying with them. Michael was working as a printer that year, and the younger children were at school. James and Jane were both working.
