Arrived in America with Michael Teevan and Catherine McGraw in 1884, along with a Margaret and a Thomas, both aged 10 years old. His parentage is unknown, but in the 1930 census he said his father was Irish and his mother from New York - clearly alluding to Michael and Catherine.

In 1900, he and Margaret, the daughter of Michael Teevan and Catherine McGraw, were boarding at Paterson Ward 5, Passaic, New Jersey. He listed his date of birth as May 1874 and claimed to have been born in Scotland (which he certainly wasn't). They were both working as silk weavers, and were both literate.

By 1910, his wife, children and mother-in-law were living with him in Huntingdon, Fairfield, Connecticut. He and Elizabeth had lost a child by then, and had four remaining. Daniel worked as a weaver in a velvet shop, and rented their house.

A draft registration card for WW1 shows that in September 1918, his family were living at 96 New St., Shelton, Fairfield. He was working as a postmaster, and named Elizabeth as his nearest relative. He gave his date of birth as 30 Aug 1873, different from the previous census return but more likely to be accurate. At age 45, he had grey hair. He was tall and of medium build, and his eyes were blue.

In 1930, the whole of the family - with the exceptions of the two eldest girls, Grace and Sarah - were still living together in Shelton, Fairfield. Daniel was a stock salesman for a brokerage office. He owned his own house worth $9000, and had a radio set.
