Note on Husband: John J Teevens

John was listed in the 1861 Boston City Directory with the surname Tevin. He was an ironworker with a house at 30 S. Cedar Street.

When he was married, John was a coppersmith. He said that he was born in Boston and that he was 24, shaving about 5 years from his real age.

He was still a coppersmith in 1875.

By the 1878 directory, John was in the wines and liquors business at 148 West Sixth Street. In 1879 he described himself simply as a salesman.

John, Ellen and their three children appear in the 1880 census. They were staying in Boston, and John was working in a liquor store.

In 1882-3 John was listed again in the City Directories, working and living at the same address as he had in 1878.

By 1884 he had apparently expanded his business, working from both 22 West Broadway and 148 West Sixth, still living at the latter.

From the book, "The Story of Irish in Boston" in 1889:

"TEEVENS, JOHN J, born in Darrlheyk, County Leitrim, Ireland, Nov 11, 1844. He received his early education at the National Schools in Ireland, and emigrated, July 12, 1860, locating in Boston. In 1860 he engaged to learn the trade of coppersmith with A.B. & S.H. Loring, where he was employed for fifteen years. In 1875 he entered into the liquor business for himself at South Boston, and now represents real estate to the amount of about $40,000. He was a member of the Common Council of 1887, '88, '89, serving on the Committees on Printing, Public Library, Ordinance, and Judiciary. He is a member of a number of Irish societies."

John also appears in the 1890 and 1900 Boston directories, living and working at 148 W. Sixth Street.
